Farrukh, hardback binding in dust jacket, the dust jacket is taped to the boards, copy clean inside and in very good condition. Islam in English Literature is an important book which traces the interest, bafflement, hostility and sympathy with which English writers have regarded Islam since it first appeared on their intellectual horizon. From Chaucer and Shakespeare to Byron and Carlyle, they recognized it, in one way or another, as a force which could not be ignored, and which was bound to leave an impact on their thinking. The author of this book, Byron Porter Smith, was a professor of English at the American University of Beirut from 1910 to 1953. He died in 1955, shortly after his retirement and return to the United States. During the 43 years which he spent in Lebanon he educated hundreds of young Arabs, and was, in a sense educated by them. The result of this two-way relationship can be seen in the wide-ranging scholarship and sympathetic understanding with which he approaches his subject. This new edition is edited by Suheil B. Bushrui and Anahid Malekian, both on the faculty of the English Department at the American University of Beirut.
