Saadeh left Brazil returning to his homeland, his face radiating joy, determination, faith, and will as he bid farewell to his comrades at Sao Paulo Airport. Upon his arrival, before the great crowds of nationalists who had gathered to welcome him, he declared: “This day is the happiest day I have witnessed in my life up to now.” His happiness on that day was the happiness of dignity, the pride he felt in the sight of those gathered masses. However, the reactionary authorities who held power in the homeland swiftly moved to rally allies from Lebanon’s sectarian movements and their press mouthpieces to oppose Saadeh and prevent his voice from reaching the people. Thus began the battles for freedom and political rights — the struggle to reach the people. Saadeh also waged the battle to regain leadership of his Party, to rebuild its ideological structure, its disciplined organization, and the foundations of its revolutionary path. He confronted the forces that were driving the nation toward the southern catastrophe and sought — despite the reactionary obstacles — to unite efforts to repel the Zionist threat facing all of Syria. Through all his endeavors, he embodied a model of struggle that left no excuse for anyone to waver in supporting Syria.
