Bertold Spuler (1911-1990), was a German orientalist and director of the Islamic Institute at the University of Göttingen, then professor at the University of Hamburg. He was a member of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft. He published fundamental works on the beginning of Islamic culture in the Middle East and Central Asia, particularly at the time of the Mongol conquests. His work on Iran's wider space is still authoritative.
