Al-Ṣuli's Adab al-Kuttab ("The Conduct of Secretaries") is regarded as one of the most important works on adab (belles-lettres) and the art of rhetoric. Some refer to it as Adab al-Katib ("The Writer's Conduct"). Despite its modest size, it contains a wealth of valuable observations and excellent discussions on various branches of literature, oratory, rhetoric, and the art of writing. In the introduction, al-Suli writes: "This is a book that I have composed concerning what every secretary requires, whether he occupies the highest rank or the lowest position. I have made it comprehensive, encompassing everything a secretary needs, so that, in all such matters, he need rely on no other work but this one."
